Motueka Youth Council
Hello everyone! Micheal Whinray, Harry Townsend, Jacob Linn, Amanda Spittal, Sophie Harrison, Mikayla Dixon, Gemma Proebst, and myself (Joni Tomsett) are the representatives of the youth in the Motueka region for the Tasman Youth Council for 2011.
The Tasman Youth Council (TYC) was established in 1998, out of a need expressed from local young people to have their voices heard and their interests taken seriously. It comprises four regional clusters set up in the Richmond, Motueka, Golden Bay and Murchison wards, and each cluster carries out projects and initiatives relevant to the needs expressed by local young people in their communities.
A maximum of 25 members are recruited each year to represent the TYC, who are presented with youth leadership and development opportunities to equip them with the necessary skills to fore fill their role/duties.
This year we plan to put as much information on this page as possible, including youth events, progression on our youth week event, and also any news for youth that comes about.
Joni Tomsett.

We have only a few days left until 'The Little Day Out'!!
The youth council has been very busy over the past fortnight, holding two meetings a week (hence we haven't had time to update Motueka Online!) to ensure our event is successful for the youth of Motueka. Unfortunately we have experienced several hiccups recently, which have altered our plans for Saturday slightly. We have had trouble maintaining our confirmations of performers, which left us rethinking our original plans.
As intended it will cost $5 to enter our event and this will now pay for your entertainment including climbing on the Mot Rock, boxing on the bouncy boxing ring, rounds on the pole pillow fighting and music provided by our fantastic local bands. Our lineup for the evening now includes: Brooklyn School, Zumba, All that I despise, What Lies Here and Musgrave. We will also have food stalls and coffee carts there on the night.
With the sponsorship of prizes that we have gained, we are hoping that everyone that goes through the door on the night will each receive a ticket or number that will put them into the draw to win some spectacular prizes. We would like to give a big thanks to these sponsors: Westpac, Bay Pharmacy, Whitwells Menswear, Astrolabe Fashions, Bin Inn, Floral Affaire, United Video and Abel Tasman Outdoors. These local businesses have been very supportive of the Motueka Youth Council and have kindly donated fantastic merchandise.
Our event has been advertised throughout town, and thanks to Tegan we now have a beautiful sign hanging at the clock tower with details of 'The Little Day Out'. We would like to acknowledge the Maori Wardens who will be patrolling the stadium on Saturday to guarantee our event will run smoothly. I would like to mention Jody Maru and Libby Brown who have been overseeing all eight youth councillors, and thank them for all their assistance.
Come along and meet your local youth council at 'The Little Day Out' on Saturday 25th June, 4pm-8pm at the Motueka Recreation Centre.

June 1st
Joni was away this week for our Youth Council meeting so I thought I would grab this opportunity to introduce myself (Sophie Harrison) and fill you in on what we have been up to this week!
We are currently all eagerly and anxiously counting down the days to the 25th! We are all rushing around sorting the last bits and pieces (with help from Libby and Jody Maru) to make 'The Little Day Out' an epic event for the youth of Motueka. I can now announce some of our line-up for the night .... (exciting!!) .... Brooklyn School, The Impressions, The Black Spotts and All the I despise. So come along and support these local performers!
We have now gained sponsorship from businesses up High Street and I would like to personally thank these shops for being so generous and accommodating when Tegan, Michael and myself came knocking on your door! This means we have some fantastic spot prizes up for grabs, tell your friends!
The eight of us are all geared up for this winter as we have been decked out in brand new council hoodies. With Tasman Youth Council plastered all over our back you sure won't miss us floating out and about!
Seeing our plans come to reality is beginning to sink in and we would love to see a mass of youth on the 25th of June, 4pm - 8pm at the Motueka Rec Centre. If you want to download a copy of the poster for the event, click here.

Everything is full steam ahead! It's getting all very exciting. The posters have been distributed! I recently went on a leadership day on event planning in Nelson and it helped so much. We still have a LOT to do and to get organised but everyone is staying optimistic and getting things done.
We now have been taken over by Libby Brown who is out co-ordinator for the rest of the year. Amanda and I helped design the Youth Week brochures which have been distributed around Tasman/Nelson area last week. They contain the events which are being produced for Youth Week 2011. The motto for Youth Week this year is 'be proud, be responsible, be youth'. Everything is going well from TYC and we're just eagerly waiting for the 25th of June where we hope we can stand at the back of the rec stadium with smiles on our faces and pride inside. Let's make this happen eh? :)
May 2nd:
Over the holidays Amanda and I drove over to Dry Crust to help produce the flyers for YOUTH WEEK. We decided to go with the colours of blue, lime and pink. We wanted to make these eye catching and fun, something that a youth would want to pick up. These will be available soon in the Tasman region, these flyers give you information on the events that are coming up. The events look very exciting. If you want more information on youth week visit this web page.
The Motueka TYC crew are back and raring to go! During the holidays we had a meeting at the recreation center, where we talked about any new updates that any of us had and we said our final good-bye to Kirsty. We are steadily begining to make things happen! We now have some food stalls and performers who have agreeded to be apart of 'The Little Day Out'. This is really exciting for us and everything is beginning to fall into place.
Last term we had a little road block. We found out that rockquest would be held on the same night as 'the Little Day Out' so we made the decision to change it - the Little Day Out is now on the 25th of June! If you think that you have any services that could help us make 'the Little Day Out' a success, please feel free to contact me on 0220753904. Everything that the community does for the youth of Motueka is appreciated.
Till next week, good bye.
April 11th:
Last Tuesday, Michael and I went along with Kristy (TYC Motueka co-ordinator) to 'Dry Crust' where they helped us to design our "the little day out" posters. We arrived in the pouring rain with little ideas in our heads and a handful of damp, written thoughts. First, we had our brief where we tried to communicate the ideas that we had for our poster. We then huddled down around a computer screen where the designer began his magic right before our eyes. On our meeting we were presented with the first final draft. Wow! It looks amazing, with big bold writing, a nature feel, and wonderful greens and blues. You will soon see these posters plastered on the fronts of shop windows.
We have finalised some details for "the little day out". It will be held at the rec centre in the gym, it will be free entry, it will run from 4 to 8 o'clock, it's alcohol, smoke and drug free, it is open to all youth, there will be food, music, and entertainment. We are hoping for around 250 people to come to our event so please, tell your friends and family about it!
The latest meeting we had, we really put our heads down. Things need to be done. We all split ourselves into groups and all have different jobs, from contacting the bands to sponsorship. We had the posters so Tegan and Sophie are going to begin their crusade to collect sponsorship, Harry and Jacob are still battling/dawdling to contact the rock quest bands, Mikayla is contacting the sturgeons to get their supports. We've all got a job and responsibility to make this event happen.
Sadly, our lovely, amazing Kristy is leaving. It is her first time guiding the TYC and she's leaving us! We will miss her very dearly but will definitely keep in contact. I'm sure she will leave us in good hands so we can continue to keep fighting on and making things happen.
Till next week, good bye.
April 1st:
We have been having meetings each Thursday lunch time discussing an event that we can hold during youth week. Our idea so far is to hold our own version of 'big day out' but instead, call it 'little day out' which consists of live music, yummy food, rides, and other entertainment. Next Tuesday we will be going to Richmond's Dry Crust to get our designs completed so we can start advertising. We plan to make this a free event so spread the word to your friends, and family!
Also, we have a page that is being underused at the moment, so take some time to have a look - it's at www.jamonline.co.nz
