Wawata Tawhiti - Distant Dreams - The Early Settlement of Motueka
Distant Dreams is about the settling of Motueka, from the Maori to Europeans. The hardships and triumphs experienced by Maori and pioneers alike. How they adapted to, and tamed, their new land and country. What was it like for them?
On arrival the Maori had to adapt to a different climate, vegetation and wildlife. By the time the first European settlers arrived, Maori had carved out a good living and were able to provide much needed help and provision. The sheer survival of daily living, clearing the bush to be able to cultivate the land and grow crops and vegetables.
Many settled first in Riwaka then moved on to Motueka. To achieve their dreams it was hard work and dedication by one and all.
Also the explorers, their part in the future settlement and the influence of the NZ Co.
The exhibition runs from 13th December 2010 through to June 2011
