Footpaths
The Community Board has been urging Council to improve (or in some cases, create) footpaths and cycleways in and around Motueka, given the number of them in poor condition and the extra number of users of mobile scooters and prams in town using them.
[April 2010] Board member Tara Forde compiled some photos and comments on some of the problem areas she's come across - See the Discussion Forum »
[April 2010] The Board has learnt that for the 2009-2010 Year there will not be any new footpaths, cycle lanes or mobile scooter ramps constructed in the Motueka ward. The one exception is a "shared" footpath/cycle-lane to serve the Brooklyn School. We are pleased about the Brooklyn work, but consider there are a number of projects which should also be attended to: paths, cycle-lanes and better crossings. The Community Board will press for more urgency and more money on these basic works.

[31 May 2010] At the May 27 meeting of the TDC Engineering Services Committee meeting, committee chair Trevor Norriss asked the Council to consider reinstating the Footpath Rehabilitation Budget to $100,000 district wide. He said the present budget of $50,000 was not enough, given the age of some of the district's footpaths. - See news report »

TDC's Steve Elkington replied to the May 8 list that at this time he cannot indicate timing of the work requested and how many could be built in the upcoming financial year. Council will try to use the list to for priority order, but "wherever there is a crossing required and not on the board's priority list at the same intersection, or one that is within the CBD or on an arterial/collector road route, the Council reserves the right to adjust the programme accordingly". He added that "closer to the time of advertising the contract for the work, a list of pram crossing sites ... will be forwarded to the board for its information".
[13 July 2010] At the July meeting of the community board, David Ogilvie tabled a report of the status of urban streets in the ward with no footpaths, only one footpath, and no kerb or channel, as a checklist against which to measure progress in future. View the report »
[23 July 2010] The council's list of new footpath projects for the whole district, with the weightings of urgency set for each by the "matrix" software, was presented at the July Engineering Services Committee meeting. Five of the top 18 footpath projects were for Motueka and several others within the Motueka ward. Summary of projects in our ward here. Or View the full report here »
[9 February 2011] The Board was informed that TDC's tender for the next round of new footpaths and mobile scooter crossings in the Motueka ward had been delayed because it had been possible that additional funding could have been available, but this did not eventuate.
[14 June 2011] The Board was able to announce that mobile scooter / pram crossing ramps had been constructed at the Greenwood/Thorp, Clay/Moffatt and several other corners, funded from the previous year's Board surplus.
