Motueka Community Board: The Status of Current Projects
The board has many small and large projects on the go at any time, and the status of many of them are often discussed at the monthly board meetings. On this page the most active current items are listed and over time the status of each will be summarised so that we can all see at a glance which ones are awaiting further meetings and decisions etc, and who is looking after them.
Footpath programme
[Last updated: 14 June 2011] The Community Board has been urging Council to place at a higher priority the improvement of footpaths at intersections, to enable mobile scooters and prams to negotiate them more safely and comfortably; and to improve (or in some cases, create) footpaths and cycleways, given the number of them in poor condition and the extra number of users of mobile scooters and prams using them. Dealing with Freedom Camping
[Last updated: 28 April 2011] In recent years the Tasman District, and Motueka and Golden Bay in particular, has been troubled by the adverse outcomes of freedom camping, as have many other tourist areas of New Zealand. This relates to people camping in unregulated areas, often with no self-contained toilet and cooking facilities, and having no qualms about polluting the environment. History and current status »
Motueka River Flood Control
[Last updated: 13 February 2012] The Motueka River stopbanks are over 50 years old and questions have been asked about, firstly, their ability to confine a large flood that may over-top it and, secondly, whether or not they are adequate to contain smaller floods through their porous structure. Engineering consultants and council staff have proposed rebuilding and refurbishment schemes and the community is being asked to select an option that minimises cost and risk. Water Allocation, Coastal Pipeline & Motueka Water Reticulation
[Last updated: 27 October 2011] The extraction and distribution of Motueka's water supply, pumped from the river aquifer below, has been a "hot" issue for residents, people living in nearby areas, and Tasman District Council. Policy and action centres on whether or not more water (or how much) should and can be extracted sustainably from the aquifer, and if so where it should and can be piped to. Also the need and cost of reticulating all of Motueka's water through the Motueka Plains Water Supply project. Details and current status »
Motueka Library upgrade or rebuild
[Last updated: 11 April 2012] The Community Board has been pushing for a significant upgrading of the library, either to make a large extension, possibly upward, or to move to a new building. Reports have shown that the building needed at least another 310 square metres to meet minimum NZ standards for public libraries, and TDC has agreed that an upgrade and expansion will be on agenda for 2011. The plans are now available for public feedback. Details and current status »
High Street streetscaping, congestion and safety
[Last updated: 9 April 2011] Since the turn of the century, the appearance of High Street has been a topic of controversy - the trees, the furniture, the kerbing, pedestrian crossings etc. Add to that the increase in traffic congestion particularly in summer and the associated road safety issues. With the significant roadworks programme and publication of the Transportation Plan in the first half of 2010, the topic has again been hot, as can be seen on many pages of this website. Cycle Lane and Cycleway projects
[Last updated: 14 December 2011] In recent years advocacy for more facilities for cyclists in and around Motueka has grown, and much work has been done on several walkways which also serve cyclists, plus the cycle lane out through Lower Moutere amongst other prepared roadside surfaces for cyclists. Also part of the Nelson-Tapawera-Motueka cycle tour will pass through Motueka. Details and current status »

[Last updated: December 2011] A project is under way in conjunction with Keep Motueka Beautiful to improve parking and picnicking facilities and the visual appearance of the strip between the Motueka Quay Road and the shoreline, opposite the end of Old Wharf Road. There is also some concern about erosion damage to the old wharf which is being damaged by sea erosion. Details and current status »
Motueka bypass and river bridge
[Last updated: 16 December 2010] Planning and building a town bypass for heavy or all traffic, and construction of a new bridge, has been discussed for decades, and particularly on and off over the past 20 years. Most people now regard progress on this as urgent, particularly given NZTA's decision not to fund it until at least 2030. Details and current status »
